What can RURadonSafe do for you?
We can perform a short 2-3 day test at your home with a digital constant monitoring radon detector. If radon is detected, we can set up a 3 month and 1 year Alpha Track passive monitoring device in an optimum location within your house. These devices are sent away to a lab for diagnostic testing to determine the average level of radon present in your home over a 3 month and 1 year period.
The radon testing services include initial assessments, long-term monitoring, and detailed reporting. By conducting both short-term and long-term tests that accurately measure radon levels in your home, if radon levels exceed recommended levels, we will provide recommendations for finding a remediation company if necessary. Frequently Asked Questions
What is radon and why is it a concern for homeowners?
Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that can accumulate indoors, particularly in basements and poorly ventilated spaces. Long-term exposure to high levels of radon can increase the risk of lung cancer, making it a significant health concern for homeowners.
Can radon levels fluctuate in my home?
Yes, radon levels can vary based on factors such as weather, time of year, type of house and ventilation. That’s why it’s important to conduct regular testing.
Why does it take such a long period to test for radon in my home?
Because radon levels fluctuate inside a house, affected by many factors like weather conditions and outside atmospheric pressure. Radon measurements have to be taken and averaged over months. It is common to conduct 4 consecutive tests over a 3 month period, as well as a one year test, to determine the average level of radon in your home.
Is radon testing required by law in Calgary?
While radon testing is not legally required, it is highly recommended by health authorities to ensure the safety of your home and family.
How do I know if my home has high levels of radon?
The only way to know if your home has high levels of radon is to test for it.
What's the big deal if radon is found in my home? I've lived in it for 15 years!
Being exposed to high levels of radon in your home has the potential to cause lung cancer. Someone that smokes tobacco products might never get lung cancer, but the probability is much higher than a non smoker. Radon exposure is the second leading cause of lung cancer in North America. It is estimated that 16% of all lung cancer cases in Canada are because of high radon exposure. Health Canada estimates 1 in 20 people exposed to high levels of radon have a risk of developing lung cancer. If you smoke, your chances of lung cancer becomes 1 in 3.
What kind of research has been done in Canada for radon exposure in residential and commercial buildings?
An extensive project was conducted by researchers in Canada as part of the Evict Radon National Study Team. The findings of their study is in the "2024 Cross Canada Survey of Radon Exposure in the Residential Buildings of Urban and Rural Communities". Their study found approximately 1 in 5 residences in Canada have radon levels above the current Health Canada guideline. 1 in 6 properties in Calgary have radon levels exceeding this level. Okotoks is even higher where 1 in 3 exceed this level. High River and Strathmore are 1 in 4.
